So you want to make your own website?
Don’t know anything about HTML or CSS? Don’t even know what that means? Don’t worry, you don’t have to. In the next few pages I’ll walk you through how to create a professional, database driven, website using a powerful little utility called WordPress.
WordPress is free, easy to install, and easy to use. I know what you’re thinking. “Sure it may be easy to you, you’re a tech guy!” First off, please don’t yell at me. Secondly, not only is it easy to use, but you’re going to have me (a “tech guy”) walking you through every step of the way. Trust me, if you follow along, you could have your website up in less than an hour. Still don’t believe me? Watch the video below. I’ll install wordpress, and set up the basic shell of the site you’re currently on in less than ten minutes!
WordPress powers many websites you’ve probably seen before.. Fortune 500 companies, pop stars, your local masseuse, and even the poet down the street. They’re all using WordPress, so what are you waiting for?
Breakdown of the steps to make a website
So what can you expect when you make your own website? Maybe you’re worried you’ll get to step 5 and realize you don’t have what it takes to build a website. I assure you, if you follow along with each step, you will have a site up in no time. I’m not going to lose you with a bunch of technical jargon. I won’t assume you know something that you may not. I’ll break it down so anyone can follow along. Don’t just read the guide and hope you can remember how to do it later though, it will make things far more difficult. If you follow along with the guide you’ll see everything that’s in front of you on your website, is precisely what is being referenced in the guide. So here’s a quick breakdown.
Step 1. Buy a domain name. Before you can make your own website you need a place to put it. If you think of your website as a house, think of your domain name as the plot of land you’re going to build on. There are places that offer “free domains”, but they are actually just subdomains. So it will look like “www.yoursite.otherbusinessname.com.” Buy your own domain name to make sure it looks like “www.yoursite.com.” It’s only $10-$15 a year. You can buy a domain from any domain registrar like GoDaddy. I recommend using HostGator for your first domain however. I’ll tell you why in the next step.
Step 2. Set up hosting. If your domain is the land on which you build your house, hosting would be the bills you pay to keep your house functioning. Water, electric, garbage man, you know the drill. If only those bills were less than $10 a month! This is where HostGator comes in. I personally use them and have for many years. For a guide that’s supposed to be easy they are the obvious choice. You can buy a domain and setup your hosting in one fell swoop.
Step 3. Install WordPress. WordPress is your sites infrastructure. Without WordPress it wouldn’t be as easy to make a website. If you choose HostGator as your host, you can install WordPress with just a few clicks, and start building a website literally in minutes.
Step 4. Create a website. Now armed with WordPress actually building a website is a breeze. You’ll be able to pick the way your site looks, change layouts, change colors, and add your content, without any coding whatsoever. You’ll be amazed how quickly you can start to make your own website.
So there you go. A brief run down of how to make your own website. Obviously the guide will be more detailed, so go ahead and get started!
